We hired one in JBurg from BushLore and drove around. Roads were not great, in fact they were worse in Zambia than any other country, so allow more time to travel.

Where are you bringing your car from? almost 6 years ago

I hired one in Cape Town and drove up through Botswana into Zambia that way. If it's your own car you need your ownership papers and insurance docs. If it's a hire car, show them your hire paperwork and proof it's insured. You have to pay various road fund licence/duty fees (take small denomination US Dollar notes) etc but it's fairly straightforward. You also have to get one of their insurance policies for the car that can be done at the border crossing between Zim and Zam (the way i went in). over 5 years ago
