Hi everyone, what is the best way of going from Hanoi to Hoi An? Price is important but travelling with a 7 year old girl, so comfort is maybe important too. Train, busses? Thank you in advance.

Bus is cheaper and will take you direct to Hoi An. Train is a bit more comfortable (and still just about cheaper than a flight) but will require a taxi from Danang train station. Your 7 year old will probably find both the sleeper bus and the train exciting anyway! about 9 years ago

It's a long journey by either bus or train - might be OK on your own but I'm not sure I'd recommend that with children.

I'd suggest flying to Danang and then taxi - most hotels in Hoi An will arrange a driver to meet you if you let them have your flight arrival details (and this then avoids the chaos of all the other drivers at the airport trying to get your business.)

Vietnam is a great destination for children - Hoi An especially. about 9 years ago

Plane, train and open bus are your options.
For train, you can see my experience with Livitrans (Hanoi- Da Nang): http://www.hanoi-airport-transfers.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Fare: about $33 for a one-way trip from Hanoi to Hoian. After reaching Danang you can get a taxi to Hoi An for 300,000-450,000 VND dong depending on your bargaining skills :). Or you can arrange an airport transfer in advance. www.yourlocalbooking.com offers private transfer from Da Nang airport to Hoi An for 16 USD.

For Open bus: if you are longer than 5 foot and weigh more than 40kg its a rough night. Just to give you an idea, there are about 48 beds in a normal size bus so its a really tight fit, the beds only recline half way, you can’t sit up in the beds. Sinh cafe runs sleeper buses between Hanoi and Hoi An. Book online at www.yourlocalbooking.com or you can book when you arrive Hanoi almost 9 years ago
