Hi, much depends on where you are landing.

If it's Hanoi, just explore the city and maybe head up to Sapa if you have the time.

If it's HCMC then again, the city is a wonderful place to explore for a few days. You'd need longer to head down into the Mekong Delta.

Alternatively, skip either city and fly up to Danang - you can then get to Hoi An, a wonderful little well-preserved old town. If you do, stay in the middle not on the outer parts which have become a bit touristed.

If you search through the Vietnam section, there was one particular hotel there that I'd highly recommend. about 9 years ago

    Vietnam is stunning!

If you are only there a few days, start in Hanoi. Stay at Hanoi Backpackers hostel, and go to Halong Bay through the hostel. It is the top rated tour provider in Halong Bay, and the trip is amazing. There is a 2 day and a 3 day option. Once back in Hanoi, take the overnight train to Sapa. The rice fields in Sapa are unlike anything else in the world. Stay in Sapa town one night, and then do a 2 day, 1 night trek into the countryside where you do a home-stay in a local village. You can organized this trek/homestay from any number of local tour booking offices. After that, rent a scooter (pay no more than 100,000 dong) , and ride around for a day and see all the beautiful waterfalls. If you have more time, you can fly from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh and see the sights in the south as well. Mui Ne, Nha Trang, and even Danang (even though a bit far) are all stunning. Hope this helps! about 9 years ago

Depend on how long you in Vietnam. If you have 8 days, you can visit most Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Saigon and Mekong Delta. We did this tour with http://travelindochine.net in July 2010. Better to fly from Hanoi to Hue the drive to Hoi An. we were very tight budget, so we ask they book hotel for us and hire car & guide in each place. If you do like this, make sure you by sim card in Vietnam and keep in touch with tour operator in case you need to help

Overall, we loved our trip very much and intend to back Vietnam again with beach vacation in Nha Trang, Muine and Phu Quoc. Will book with travel indochine again
