Tanner, this surprises me because Vietnam is known for it's low crime rate. Violent crime is not very common. Rip-offs and scams are another story, it's almost a national pastime to fleece a tourist of a couple of dollars. Worldnomads.com has some tips on identifying and preventing petty crime here:

I agree with Phil. Unlikely you'll be robbed or anything, but there are many many scams, and they are unlike any other country I've been to .... As a tourist I know I'll pay more, so what. But in most countries, people will smile to get your $, not grab your arm and yell "you buy, you buy" at you. And the constant "renegotiation" after you've agreed on a price etc is frustrating and sours you on the country. Every opportunity to get $ out of you will be taken. Hit your head on a lamp on a Ha Long Bay boat?. They'll hold everyone's passports ransom until you pay (and no one will ask if you're ok). Agree on a hotel room and price? It will suddenly be full, and you'll be sent to a "better" hotel nearby for the "same" price. Not. Luckily it gets better the further south you go. about 9 years ago
In Ho Chi Minh, At night, there is a small group of bad girl man, riding on motorbike,
they asking foreigner want to go hotel with them or not, and approch the foreigner, then try to have any oppotunity to snack the wallet, handphone,
Do not go out alone at night, if they approve you, keep a distance,
after 12midnight, better travel in taxi.
do not walk on road where lesss people.
Run away from the approve any girl look(man) , they approch you, and they have on motorbike, they are all Robber!
Police in Ho Chi Minh need to have patrol more after 11pm.in Hai Ba Trung street in District 1, the robber target people drunk, and near them and talk and snack the wallet, gold on neck, handphone, motorbike while the drunker is weaknest.
They use a lot reason to talk and approch you, free this free that, later lost the property.their main target is your wallet and handphone! not interest in you. about 9 years ago
