The BEST way is by bicycle. Its not the easiest or the fastest but it is THE BEST. almost 4 years ago

If you travel to Sapa and then take the overland route via Dien Ben Phu, then crossing the border to Muang Kuang and down the Nam Ou by boat to Nongkhiaw and then road to Luang Prabang, it is really worthwhile. almost 4 years ago

Depends on how much time you have and how much stress you want to go through. The border crossings in SE Asia can be either be fairly easy (Phnom Penh to Saigon by bus) (Luang Prabang to Chiang Rai by boat) or extremely frustrating (Northern Thai to Siem Reap). We read the crossing from Hanoi can be long and arduous so after several months of travel we opted for a flight from Hanoi to Vientiane and it was so nice to arrive in a country without a hassle at the border or a 20 hr bus ride. almost 4 years ago
