I think it starts Feb 3rd 2011 if I'm not mistaken? What's it like to visit HCMC at this time? Is everywhere still open? How hard is it to find somewhere to stay or get around?

I'm not 100% sure about HCMC but I was in Hanoi during Tet and there were a lot of things closed.

Particularly on the actual day of Tet, the entire city is closed down, with quite a bit closed in the week leading up to it. It's a fun night (fireworks, etc) but if you're only going to be there briefly, you might want to steer away from actual Tet itself (or the day or two before).

Also, keep in mind that a lot of the public transport fills up before Tet when locals head back to their home city to visit families/etc - we couldn't get a train at all between Danang and Hanoi in the week leading up to Tet.

I do not reccomend traveling to Vietnam for for Tet unless you know some vietnamese families to spend time with.,..as the the entire country shuts down for like 3 weeks. not even the super market is open to buy food. over 9 years ago
