When I went to Sapa years ago (1995) it was something to see and experience. There were no hotels and you would stay with local families. Just getting there was an experience as infrastructure wasn't developed yet. I hear now there are hotels and it's become so commercial the experience is very packaged. I would recommend spending your time finding an undiscovered place, or cruising in Halong Bay where you can have a more individual experience. over 2 years ago

It seems to be a great place but I've always given up getting there given how long it takes. Flying to Hanoi and then taking a bus or night train for 8 hours makes it quite challenging. However pictures from the area look stunning. From what I understand you need to go a bit further from Sapa to avoid the tourist crowds and enjoy a more authentic visit. I would definitely put Hanoi, Ninh Binh/TamCoc, Hoi An on your list. Let us know how it is when you go! over 2 years ago

Sapa sounds good, "Sapa is orientated to make the most of the spectacular views emerging on clear days; overlooking a plunging valley, with mountains towering above on all sides. Views of this epic scenery are often subdued by thick mist rolling across the peaks, but even when it's cloudy, local hill-tribe people fill the town with colour." (Source: Vietnam Tour Booking). Furthemore, you'll travel on Oct which have weather is quite suitable for trekking tour or sightseeing tour. over 2 years ago

Yes, Sapa is worth it, if you are going to Vietnam. I caught the night train to Sapa from hanoi and the train ride was fun as well, I shared a 4 berth carriage, The weather was coolish so take a jacket, nice walks among Hmong tribes and rice fields. Nice walks around the town. Stay at least 2 or 3 nights. over 2 years ago

October is the best time to visit Sapa. The gorgeous Fall color of rice terraces. I've been to Sapa twice, in 2010 and 2015. The main town is very touristy now but it still has a romantic misty feel that's uniquely Sapa. I did a 3-day trekking and homestay Sapa trip, booked at a local tour office in Ha Noi, which I highly recommend. That's the best way to see the beautiful landscape, meeting local ethnic people, and having a good hiking workout.

Vietnam just built a high-speed highway (no motorbike allowed) where you can take a bus from Ha Noi to Sapa under 4 hours. You don't have to take 9 hours train anymore unless you want to.

You can get a sense of what Sapa trekking tour look like here http://trekkingsapa.com. I haven't personally used it but thought it would give you a good idea.

Hope this helps and enjoy Vietnam!
