Hi all, looking at flying from Hanoi - Luang Prabang (27/3/09) Just wondering if it's normaly cheaper to buy from a vietnamese travel agent or online? I think online it was looking like around $250.00AUD. Will also be looking at doing a couple of other flights around Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia.

In my experience, pretty much everywhere where you have to use Vietnam airlines - and there's a fair few places - is over priced, I imagine that's where the $250 came from? For the Hanoi to Luang Prabang route you can take Laos Airlines, but their website is dodgy at best, and travel agents around Vietnam will tell you that they can't book it for you, they're only allowed to book the more expensive local carrier. We booked the flight from Hanoi to Luang Prabang at the counter at Noi Ba airport in Hanoi about 5 minutes before the flight left and that was still around AU$200 per person. You might be able to get an Aus travel agent to book that flight for you, but I think sadly it's just a bit of an expensive trip.

In terms of flying around inside the countries, Jetstar is easily the cheapest and you can book online, but they only fly major airports around Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, Danang). Other good budget carriers that service a few more places are Air Asia and Bangkok Airways, again online services. We thought we might be able to do it more cheaply once we were over there but ended up using the Internet ones anyway because they were generally cheaper. almost 12 years ago

I agree, its almost always cheaper to buy flights when you are there, for inexpensive countries.
But I usually book on-line for AirAsia and JetStar too. I recommend AirAsia for its network and low cost fares.

The balance between on-line and in-person can be the amount of time it takes to book a flight in an Asian country. There is often quite a process to book the fare, including phone calls to finalise the booking and then arranging the delivery of "paper" tickets..... It can take hours!

Or like David you can take the risk of standby. almost 12 years ago

My sister flew from Luang Prabang to Hanoi 'bout a year ago with Laos Airlines, which was a little bit cheaper than Vietnam Air, but I don't think there's any real way to do this cheaply, sorry.

Within Vietnam Jetstar are the ticket - I took two flights last week (HCMC - Danang, Danang - Ha Noi) that cost around AUD80 total! Just keep an eye on taxis to the airport, some of them have rigged meters that tick over several times faster than they should.

As for AirAsia, they are great (I flew today for $0. No, that ain't a typo!) . . . but they only really link major hubs like Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur with smaller places, so for actually getting around between/within Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam they may not be so good.

In my opinion, bus is a fine way to get around in Cambodia, flying can be a cheap way to get around Vietnam quickly if you need to, and in Laos the roads aren't necessarily the best (although the scenery is great!) but flying is usually expensive. almost 12 years ago

I am currently in Luang Prabang and checked a local travel agent for you. They quoted $140 USD from Luang Prabang to Hanoi with Laos airlines. However I'm not sure what price you would get trying to book from Vietnam. There are many flights going in and out of the city (they fly directly over the town when they land and take off!) so I don't think you will have a problem booking when you are in Vietnam either with a travel agent or online. almost 12 years ago

As an official Vietnam Airlines agent, VietnamFlihgt.Net have more preferences than any agents regarding fare and flight availability and it makes VietnamFlight.Net the best place to find cheap tickets for Vietnam Airlines flights about 9 years ago

You can book online or travel agents. it is not much different. Sometimes online is cheaper but when you want to change something and you may get problem if you book online while it is easier if you book from a travel agent. 10 months ago
