Only have time to make a visit to one area of Vietnam and I am wondering where is the best part of Vietnam? The North or the South for tours, fun, diving, shoping and everything else...

I found Ha Noi to be a much better (and different) experience to Ho Chi Minh. Ha Noi has beautiful wide boulevard streets lined wit htree's, a wonderful lake at the center of town and still retains some old french architecture. It's busy but nothing like the dirt and grime of Ho Chi Minh. almost 11 years ago

The south is where you can have the best "fast food" style visit. It's just much more efficient doing everything in the South. Of course, it's also more tourist-oriented there and you may have to pay more.

Things in the North are a little slow and northerners are well-known for their laid back attitude. People in the South are warmer and probably friendlier towards tourists.
The best part of Vietnam to me: it's in the middle, Hue, Danang, Hoi An or Nha Trang.

It also depends on which time of the year. Visiting the North could be fun during spring time. However, if you go there during the Tet (Vietnamese New Year, exactly on Valentine this month) it could be dead boring. Especially if you do not know anybody and stay in a big city.

Diving: consider going to Hanoi and then visit Halong Bay when the sky is clear (or when it's warmer but not too hot like in the Summer.)
Or going to Saigon and then heading to one of those islands in the south. almost 11 years ago

The whole Delta south of Ho Chi Minh is excellent (http://journals.worldnomads.com/simon_monk/country/233.aspx) but I'd also recommend flying into Danang and heading to Hoi An for a week. If you go to Hoi An stay at this place http://www.haanhotel.com as it's in the old town and is very pleasant.

Hi! Best of Vietnam should be Hanoi! From hanoi , you can see all beautiful landscapes in the north of Vietnam as Halong bay, Tam Coc , Sapa , North west or north east of Vietnam!
