I'd say buses - mainly because there is more competition which generally means better service and more flexibility. Certainly on our last two or three trips there the transport infrastructure was pretty good and easy. about 11 years ago

i lived in Saigon for a while and found that while first travelling around the south and getting out to the coast buses is definstely the way to go, but at you pass Nha Trang, i would hi8ghly recomend trains, first of all a trip to vietnam isnt a trip unless you have been on the train adn seen as teh north is quite spred a part you can at least get a few hours sleep on the train and its quite teh experience. PLus if you plan on going to Sapa train is your only option., have an amazing time. about 11 years ago

I can't speak for the train as I never took it. My girlfriend and I took a sleeper bus from Hanoi to Hoi An and from Hoi An to Nha Trang. It was cheap and convenient, but trying to sleep on it was pretty tough. I was near the front (to avoid car sickness) and I swear it sound like the horn was right beside my head. All night long they barrel down these roads blowing their horn as they approach other cars. It was a tough sleep but I managed as I'm pretty easy. Definitely an experience. about 11 years ago
