If you do it in a single day, you'll feel rushed and won't enjoy it. It's a nice two day trip, with an overnight stop in Morro Bay or a similar nice, small town. over 8 years ago

@deserted is right. You could do it in a day, but you'll see more and enjoy it more if you take two. over 8 years ago

Be sure to check out Hearst Castle, St Louis Obispo and Monterey. I do the drive from Santa Cruz to SF often, and never tire of it, but by the time you reach Santa Cruz, you may be ready to just catch the 101 or 280 (via Hwy 17 inland from Santa Cruz for 20 miles over the mountain pass) and just peel into SF. over 6 years ago

If you shoot up the 5, it could take as little as 5.5/6 hours, but it's an insanely boring commute. If you have the time, take all these people's advice and enjoy the California coastline. :) over 6 years ago

Just did this trip! Took us almost 10 hours combined with all of the stops we took. It's so scenic and definitely worth the time to see everything. We started in San Fran, stayed in Monterey for the night, and ended up in LA at about 5pm the next day. Stop at some of the redwood forests! over 6 years ago

Nine hours. Allow time for photographing at the turnouts and getting behind a big RV doing 30. Everybody should do it once. Gorgeous. over 6 years ago
