Lived in apple orchard land for 30 years and now very close by--as of yesterday, the fall leaves in Nelson County VA (1/3 of county is national forest/Blue RIdge Mts) were gorgeous and the apple trees still have some leaves (not noted for color like the oaks, etc.)
In Nelson County (west of Charlottesville) there's a super stop: Drumhellers Orchard which is located on the road just behind the County High School. Lots of views, nice folks, apples to buy, cider to try, etc. About 45 minutes SW of Charlottesville VA on Rt. 29 S.
In Charlottesville, it's a steep drive, but there's an amazing view to Carters Mtn. Orchard where on top there's a super shop with nice folks, fresh donuts, ciders, food, and apples. Worth the drive, but get there early (weekend traffic to there has been known to back up onto the Interstate -64-) and stay as long as you can. Bring a camera!
    Kind of late for picking---
Also good used book stores on downtown mall if interested.

Carol... Thank you so much for the suggestion. Carter mountain was just lovely last weekend. A perfect place to spend the day. Serendipity then provided the opportunity to meet the owner this weekend & I was not only able to thank him in person, but also let him know about others on the Internet singing the praises of his orchard. almost 7 years ago
