Santa Monica is a great base for visitng LA. Plenty of restaurants and things to do. easy access to the airport, and if you have a gps in your rental car it's easy to navigate the freeways. I find it really easy to get around.
A drive up to Santa Barbara is a good day trip. Spend an afternoon walking the oceanfront down to Venice beach. Entourage fans will know that Urth cafe is on Main St between Santa Monica and Venice beach. almost 7 years ago

I would stay at the W in Hollywood. Right on top of the metro station if you don't have a car. If you do, Santa Monica is good. Don't fail to go to Venice to see all the CA stereotypes. almost 7 years ago
