Take a tour of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Its inexpensive and led by really interesting docents.
The view from the Griffith Observatory is amazing at night and free. You can view the telescope nightly with astronomers onsite to answer questions. At an extra charge there is a good celestial program. Other than that the Observatory and Parking is free.
Venice Beach is great for Sunday people watching. Wear a hat, sunscreen and get an eyefull.
There are Hostels in Santa Monica and Hollywood. Ask is they are accessible by Metro. We have a great Metro System, but it doesn't go everywhere.
