I have been many times...in spring, fall, summer & winter. After our last summer visit, we vowed no more! It can be sweltering and so very humid. I agree with Lori that September is a great month. While cold, winter is a special time to go with all the holiday displays. Spring is also nice, but you definitely run a greater risk of rain.
Here's a couple of blogs that might help with things to do...

i've been twice - february and april.
I much preferred february as it wasn't as windy, it was a lot easier to rug up in thermals and coats etc and it was a lot quieter (no long lines for tourist things) but the cold isn't unbearable - and the snow is absolutely beautiful! over 9 years ago -
NYC is great at any time of year! I live here 18 years ... But at christmas, midtown is unbearable over 9 years ago

Any time is good, but summer is hot and humid, and sometimes smelly. My fave is Easter, daffodils everywhere and great photo ops at the Easter "parade" on 5th Ave Here are my NYC tips:, including a few places to stay (and lots of places to eat): http://traveleater.wordpress.com/nyc-field-notes/ over 9 years ago

Anytime that isn't the summer peak! Too busy - too many people, too long to wait to get in to see the good stuff. March/April and September/October are fantastic. Stay in Midtown if you can - perfect location to get to everything over 9 years ago

Least crowded is summer. Best weather is Oct. Love the Hilton on 52nd st. Great location. over 9 years ago
