Fly in, rent a compact car (cheap), get a room at any hotel/condo in Kihei near the beach (Mana Kai is a great hotel on the beach). Check in, unpack, go to the beach, relax and repeat daily. Eat breakfast at the 5 Palms Restaurant. Aloha! over 9 years ago

Rent a car, it only takes about 5 hrs to drive the entire island...not including stops. We left at 9am, travelled the entire island, and arrived home around 7pm. The roads around the north section of the island are not recommended, so you can cut some time off there. Don't drive them unless you are a very experienced driver & not afraid of very narrow, one lane dirt roads riding the edges of cliffs...very scary!!
You definitely have to spend an evening watching the surfers...we found it best at Mackena Beach area.
Noelani Resorts is the best place to stay. You are literally right on the ocean with a breathtaking view.
