It depends on what you want to do, or not do, while you're there. Will you be just sitting and staring at the ocean or do you want activities? There's not much at Half Moon Bay. Santa Cruz will have the most activities, both in the town and in the surrounding area. Are you going to Napa for the wine? Then you'll find more in the Santa Cruz area, inland just a few miles. over 6 years ago

Thanks Dee! We are going to Napa for the wine and although we love the beach we do like to vacation in areas that offer activities in addition to the beach. Since we will get our wine fix in Napa, the activities don't need to center around wineries either. Any additional thoughts you have would be great. Thanks again. over 6 years ago

I always vote for less transit time and more hang time, so I'd stay north of the Golden Gate and explore the Point Reyes National Seashore, since you'll be coming from Napa. Stop at the Rouge et Noire Cheese Factory on the Point Reyes/Petaluma Road and stock up on some Camembert or Brie for your picnic, and then stay at the Boatel or a B&B in Inverness, or the youth hostel on the Limantour Road. Rent a kayak at Blue Waters or Seatrek and paddle across Tomales Bay (can even camp on the beach, if you're of that persuasion!) Hike out to the very tip of Pierce Point and see the Tule Elk, ride horses to the beach from Five Brooks Stables, walk on the Earthquake Trail at the Visitor Center, shop at Toby's Feed Barn in Point Reyes Station, have a fancy dinner at Manka's Czech restaurant, make a jaunt to Mt Tamalpais and Muir Woods, get lost on the way to Bolinas, hike down the Steep Ravine trail from PanToll to Stinson and have a frostee at the Parkside Cafe before catching the Stagecoach back up to your car (CHECK SCHEDULE!)--and of course Mill Valley and Sausalito and the Golden Gate Bridge are pretty attractive spots too...Have fun! over 6 years ago
