That depends if you want to stay in Charleston proper or at one of the barrier islands, city or beach? Kiawah Island at the Sanctuary or downtown, any hotel, as it's a very walkable city or rent a bike. over 7 years ago

Unless you want to be at the beach, or on the coast, you really should stay downtown. And by that I mean on the peninsula south of Calhoun St. Downtown. Chz is very walkable and very cool. It has one of the best collections of 18th and 19th century architecture on the east coast (maybe in the US). Museums, restaurants, and shops abound. Regarding the hotel, it really depends on your budget. Nothing is cheap, but the prices go from not too bad, to stratospheric. Do a search on Tripadvisor and there will be lots of reviews and recommendations. Also, a disclaimer. I live in downtown Charleston and may be slightly biased, but not too bad. Enjoy!! over 7 years ago

I'm going to have to agree with James V on this one. Staying downtown is a must without a car. There are many other ways to get around the city - tour buses, pedicabs, bike rentals, public trolleys - that work just as well, but being centered in a walkable area is vital. It all depends on what you are looking for in the city also. If you want to experience the charm, history and colonial architecture, look to stay in the French Quarter neighborhood. You can walk to so many great restaurants and historic sites from that location. over 7 years ago
