If you took highway 5, a multi-lane highway, from SF to SD, it would take you 8-9 hours. Hwy 1 is a totally different experience. 3 days to be comfortable because you're gonna want to linger, and you're gonna want to cruise slowly through some stretches because it will be one of the most breath-taking drives you'll ever take.

We live in SF and we've driven Hwy 1 many times and it still amazes us that we live so close to one of the most beautiful places in the world. about 9 years ago

I agree with the above info with the exception that is usually takes us about 7 hours to drive between LA and SF on Highway 5 -- with pit stops, lunch etc. The trip between LA and San Diego is about 2.5 hours but is highly dependent on the traffic situation.

Hwy 1 is a must if you have time. I would check http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi for road closure information as that can be an issue on that route. Also weekends and summers will be more crowded and therefore slower. Give yourselves more time than you think you will need. 3 days minimum. about 9 years ago
