Both Frenchmen and Frenchwomen can be what you might interpret as haughty. But no one's going to hurt you. In France, as in life, just be polite and you'll do fine. about 9 years ago

massive generalisations aside; it depends what sort of "American tourist" you are. If you're a fool they'll treat you like one. about 9 years ago

French people are formal relative to Americans, so work to understand their perspective, and you will enjoy your time in their country. Have fun! about 9 years ago

In my own experience, I was treated amazingly well while in France. They were kind, helpful, courteous... They appreciate respect, of course, as everyone does. They also appreciate that you try to great them in French, even if it's to say "Parlez vous anglais" - and most people do, though they don't seem to go there without a few smiles and a genuine gratitude. I did not see one ounce of the old, horrible stereotype in my two weeks traveling throughout the country. about 9 years ago

I agree with the other comments. Always greet in French and use good manners and you will find the French very friendly and helpful, especially away from the tourist haunts. about 9 years ago
