I will be in Washingto DC on my own for a day and half Sunday -Monday. What can you do in your own.
Also like to know a good hotel in the city.
I hear the airport is a fair way out of town how easy is it to get to the city?
There's a metro rail connection from Dulles to DC. http://www.commuterpage.com/metroconnect.htm
Depending on the weather, DC is the PERFECT city for Sunday walking between the monuments, the Mall and museums (Smithsonian is a fave). I recently went to the Lincoln Memorial and was reminded of how impressive I is. It's near the Vietnam Memorial too.
I've long been a fan of produce markets whatever I go, and Eastern Market ranks highly. Great placenta wander on a Sunday, food stalls too, so you won't go hungry http://www.easternmarket-dc.org/ Adams Morgan can be good gritty city people watching.
Hotels, I've typically done Priceline, so no regular place to recommend, though I did stay at the Doubletree on rhode island avenue and it was great and easy to get around from there to Adams Morgan, Dupont, etc. about 8 years ago
Hotel in the city? Try Hotel Monaco (sometimes available through hotels.com). It is close to a metro line too. DC's metro is pretty easy compared to some cities. Another nice area is Dupont Circle.
I agree with wandering around on the Mall and among the monuments. I love the Lincoln Memorial, and of course the Smithsonian Museums. They don't have admission fees and are well worth the time. Get a mall map and pick one or two. You will have to come back again for many more! about 8 years ago
What can't you do, go into a hotel and get a DC guide or AAA travel guide or go into a bookstore and get a travel guide for hundreds of options. Washingtonian magazine also list many things to do. Just walking around the city is great. The National Portrait Museum stays open later and is one of the best unknown sites in DC. The bar in the willard hotel is always fun after your day. over 7 years ago
