What type of experience are you looking for? The top end luxury 'best' or the authentic local charm 'best'? over 9 years ago

Early October sounds like you are going to do some leaf peeping. Bretton Woods is the classic grand dame, but tones of B&Bs to look at too.
State of NH has a foliage website: foliage.visitnh.gov and they also list some places to stay for that season http://m.visitnh.gov/where-to-stay/ as does the Foliage Network: http://www.foliagenetwork.com/index.php/places-to-stay/northeast-us/79-places-to-stay-in-new-hampshire.html over 9 years ago -
Mountain View Grand in Whitefield, NH, and The Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton-Woods, NH, and the two fanciest in the central White Mountains. If you want to go even further "north of the notches," you could check out The Balsams Wilderness Resort in Dixville Notch, NH. There is an assortment of boutique inns between the three I've mentioned. Any hotel near a nice town is usually pretty ship shape. If you are on a budget, cabins are also an option. over 9 years ago

The best hotel in all of New Hampshire that I know of is Bedford Village Inn. Not budget, but great rooms, fabulous service, and world-class food. Book early! over 9 years ago
