Having lived there for 3 years and returned for a visit a few years ago some things haven't changed much. For Pearl do go on the Park Services tour of the Arizona but don't miss the other monument on the other side of Ford Island to the Utah. It's remains are still there above water. If you're going to range "way" out from Honolulu and have a rental car, take the ride over to the North Shore town of Haleiwa and go west to the end of the road to Kaena Point. This is the most remote shore line area of Oahu and is where many of the planes attacking Pearl flew over on their way in. Also, don't miss getting some shave ice (not shaved) in Haleiwa. Then follow the highway around the island and you'll get the chance to see the Oahu of years ago as it hasn't drastically changed over the last forty or so years. That of course allows for some changes such as Turtle Bay and some road improvements. about 9 years ago

If you have a specific interest in Pearl harbour alot of tours willl give you time to visit the Arizona memorial and associated visitor centre & then breeze out of there. But this is only a fraction of what you can see at Pearl harbour so I had to return on my own using public transport which was quite easy. If you want to visit both sides of the harbour to get a real feel for the place & all the areas that were bombed in 1945 including the mess quarter area, visit the submarine & associated musemn, the decommissioned warship & the aviation musemn, the latter two are across the bridge on the other side of the harbour go on your own. Perhaps there are tours that specialise in this, I don't know but you can do it easily on your own, they lay on a shuttle to drive you over the bridge & you can explore in your own time once you don't miss the last tour on the warship. But I found on your average tour most people don't have the indepth interest to explore all these areas and are happy to see the Arizona Memorial & toodaddle out of there. about 9 years ago
