Lots of options....I presume that you are going to travel Hwy 1 past San Luis Obispo...
San Luis is a great place to overnight particularly if you stay a little south in the town of Pismo Beach....a number of good hotels along the beach there. For fun, visit Pismo for some shopping and beach scene eating. Alternatively, you could go past San Luis and head to San Simeon....get there early enough in the day and visit Hearst Castle, then head a little past to Ragged Point and stay at the hotel there. And of course, you could stay at the famous Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo....multi-themed hotel rooms in some parts of the hotel, so it can be an interesting night. Head for downtown San Luis and you'll find some great places to eat, to complement the well developed wine business in that area. Hope this helps.... almost 10 years ago

If you are interested in the fastest route up to SF, take I-5 and stop midway at Harris Ranch. Major beef ranch. Nice hotel and very good restaurants. Not the best for vegetarians though! almost 10 years ago

if you drive up PCH, California Highway 1, San Luis Obispo is a good stop but suggest going a little further and stopping in Cambria. There are some very nice hotels on the beach. It is not a sand beach but beautiful over 9 years ago
