In 2000, I made it from Chicago to Miami via Detroit, Ontario, Buffalo, NYC, Washington Dc, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennesee, Missisippi, Louisiana from New Orleans then through Florida to Miami all via foot, bus & train wherever possible. Cost me around $4000 USD over 4 months including food, accomodation, travel & sightseeing costs. I stayed in camping grounds in my tent where I could, lived on mac & cheese and used overnight trains or busses to my next destination to save on accomodation costs too. almost 8 years ago

Assume that hostels cost around $30 per night, but there are places in between where there are no hostels. You would have to stay in budget hotels, around $50 per night, unless you are camping as Nicole said above. The train isn't as cheap here as it is in Europe, but you can get from one city to the next around $200 per leg. over 6 years ago
