My sister and I will be visiting Ireland, Scotland and part of England in January. We will be stopping for a day or so in Edinburgh. Right now I have 1 full day and 2 nights there...is that enough time to see the main sites of the Old Town (Castle, Holyroodhouse, St Giles Cathedral, Greyfriars Kirkyard, shops, cool bridge)? Any other must-see sites? I prefer historical places, castles, churches, shops, neat old-fashioned streets, rather than museums (unless they are really awesome). Thanks!

Spam - you have to love it!

Anyway, to answer your question - I think you are going to be rushing around and not able to take in all that much in just one day, so I would pick one thing that you really want to do and concentrate on that. For example, you could decide to see Edinburgh Castle and by walking there you will see lots of excellent architecture and be able to duck into the pub or a fab coffee shop or cafe along the way.

Edinburgh in the winter will be cold, probably raining and/or freezing. This completely saps you and I know I need to stop more to recharge my batteries.

If you really want a good overview, then the bus tour is good and would allow you to see a lot of Edinburgh from the warmth and comfort of the bus. about 10 years ago
