My husband and I want to visit there and maybe vacation for seven days.
I have been to Oahu, the Big Island and Kauai.
They are all wonderful for different reasons. If you have never been to Hawaii you will find Oahu a great place to vacation. Be sure to drive around the entire island. There is so much to see. Don't limit yourself to Waikiki - the typical tourist spot.

I'd suggest going to the Big Island. It's relatively empty of people and full of variety. Plus it's, well, big! Stargazing on Mauna Kea is wonderful, the huge contrast between the wet side and the dry side impressive, Volcanoes Nat Park well worth a visit, as is Hawi on the north end. Cheaper to stay in Hilo but best to fly in to Kona.
For an excellent (& inspiring) novel about some of Hawai'i's more troubled past, see Alan Brennert's Moloka'i about 2 years ago
Each island is very unique and different form each other. Kauai is very green and lush because it rains a lot there. It is also not as populated. Maui is beautiful but has become overrun with tourists and they only have one road around so you have terrible traffic jams at peak hours. Oahu has become a major city with lots of high rises. It is not as beautiful as it once was, but if you get away from the Honolulu area, it is still a lovely place. The Big Island, as it is known, is now in the news with the volcano blowing, I would not got there now. about 2 years ago
Things no one told me about Oahu: Don't rent a car because you will have to pay to park it. Arrange all tours at least a week ahead of time. There are a lot of Asian travelers in Oahu and it just takes getting used to. I should have taken a separate tour of the Dole plantation because I didn't get near enough time there with a tour of the entire island that I took. almost 2 years ago
