    San Francisco is very compact so you can actually see quite a bit in one day. But you'll want to ditch the car and do it on foot and public transportation ... the parking gods rarely smile here. You can start in Union Square and take the cable cars up to Lombard Street ("the crookedst street in the world"), then head over to Fisherman's Wharf (which is pretty touristy, but has some cool stuff like the collection of playable penny arcade machines at the Musee de Mecanique). From there you can go to Coit Tower for a great view of the city, then on to North Beach, SF's traditional Italian neighborhood that became the stomping grounds of the Beat movement (literary landmark City Lights Bookstore is here). Then finish up in Chinatown, which is adjacent to North Beach, for a family-style Chinese meal. over 4 years ago
