Hi, we are planning to stay in San Francisco for a week on November. Any hotel or apt. rental recomendations? We would like something not too expensive and with good access to transport. Sonoma vs. Napa wineries? Do we need a car for that? I'm also visiting some friends in the Tahoe area, is it icy on the roads? Thank you.

Try airbnb for san fran its fantastic in that city and will be cheaper than a hotel...lots of stuff to see just get there and get walking its a great city to walk although be warned it is extremely hilly...
Take a cable car upto lombard street and do pier 1 on a sat morning when the mrk is happening gotta do the chowder as its world famous there(anywhere is good to get it) do some seafood meals...
Just ask around ppl will give you lots of ideas...chinatown here is very large too and is a great spot to explore...
The castro and that part of town is good and unusual also...
Great place just to eat sit and watch the city work...you will love it about 4 years ago

I stayed at a boutique hotel on my first trip here - the Mosser Hotel - shared bathrooms but it was nice enough and in a great location.

As for sights to see, don't miss the seals at Pier 39 but don't bother with the tourist traps there. The Ferry Building at Embarcadero is great for foodies and people-watching (also has the best coffee in SF at Blue Bottle)

The city's train system BART is clean and reliable but doesn't run very late at night and doesn't service SF's west at all. Local foods not to miss: sourdough bread and Ghirardelli chocolate.Napa is beautiful but yes, you'll need a car. Sonoma is slightly less pretty but the wine is still very good and it's much cheaper.

Have a great trip! almost 4 years ago
