Two adults wanting to see parts of Virginia for 3 days. Driving from Blacksburg. Would Abingdon be a good destination for two days? Anything to see on the way there?

I don't know your interests, but Abingdon is lovely, lots of early VA/early American history, a good regional theater (Barter Theater) and OK food...not earth-shaking but good for this pert of the rural country. In Staunton, near Blacksburg, is a good Shakespearian theater (maybe called Blackfrier's). The drive can be lovely and you have a choice of interstate and secondary roads. Abingdon is near the VA/TN state line. Near Johnson City, TN there's a first-class fossil discovery site and museum...if you want to keep driving, Asheville,N.C.is maybe 1 1/2 hours but don't do it if there's snow/winter weather. Asheville is much bigger, but lovely. Blacksburg to Abingdon is maybe 2-3 hours...you'll enjoy the trip. over 5 years ago

While Abingdon is a choice, I feel you would see much more exploring Charlottesville, Richmond and Williamsburg. It is about 2 hours to Charlottesville, here I recommend staying at the 200 South Street Inn, this small B&B will let you get the local flavor the inn is a 19 room Bed and Breakfast two blocks off the historic downtown pedestrian Mall in Charlottesville. There is a wine and cheese evening, complimentary parking and a great breakfast, see Monticello, the Virginia Discovery Museum and UVA. Then Day 2

Day 2 Continue to Richmond VA and take in an adventure go for a Segway Ride, then a canal cruise - In the afternoon continue on I 64 south stopping at the New Kent winery for a tasting and then on to Colonial Williamsburg for 2 nights. over 5 years ago
