Is it better to take the harbour tour and learn about Alcatraz and see the city from the water or actually take the tour to Alcatraz?

No! But if you don't plan far ahead and get your tickets through the National Park Service at least a few weeks in advance, you won't be able to take a tour as they're always sold out. (Unless you go off season.) over 7 years ago

Definitely plan to visit Alcatraz. It's a very erry place, but well worth the visit and the vegetation is incredible. Like Dee said get you tickets ahead of time, ferry over and take some photos. If you are sensitive to energies you feel a lot, so may be want to surround yourself with a light ball of energy. Have fun. Rene Remington

I concur with the above comments and you should take the Alcatraz tour. I've done it probably three times with different visitors and they too have found it interesting and worthwhile. After seeing Alcatraz take a break and go to Scoma's for drinks and/or dinner or go for a gin fizz or an Irish coffee at Buena Vista cafe. Both are institutions in San Francisco and frequented by locals. Scoma's is at the bottom of Jones St. Buena Vista is where the cable car turns around at Hyde St. Twin Peaks (Market St. to Castro and bear right on 17th and take 17th to the top by following the signs) will give you JUST an incredible view of the city so be sure and have your camera! Postrio restaurant around Union Sq. is wonderful. For a view of the city and a drink, try St. Francis Drake Hotel bar at the top. Have fun and enjoy San Francisco. It IS truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world. over 7 years ago
