My thought is that it is a good idea and to do it. Yosemite is beautiful and if you're into camping and hiking and enjoying the great outdoors, you will love it. The Ahwahnee Hotel & Lodge is a good place to visit for coffee or lunch. It's expensive but it's one of those "must sees" when you're there. The views are spectacular and the location is fabulous.

WARNING: DO NOT LEAVE FOOD IN YOUR CAR--THERE ARE BEARS THERE!

For another venture you might want to head into Las Vegas via Palm Springs too. It is a very cool area. Cool as in hip because it IS the desert and this time of year it is HOT! Joshua National Forest is close by too since you're initially asking about Yosemite. You'll see lots of Joshua trees and you can do both (Palm Springs and Joshua) in one day if you like to drive that much. Have a wonderful vacation and I hope my comments have helped you. over 4 years ago

That's exactly what I did. From LA to Vegas to Yosemite and to San Fran, and back to LA via the Pacific Coast Route. It is amazing so give it a shot.
But take note that the driving part can be physically demanding though.Stay safe.
