Hi! you should definitely stop in Monterey and go down to the pier, and do a tour of Hearst Castle. very near to the latter is a brilliant spot for watching mating elephant seals - a sight not to be missed! almost 8 years ago

take hwy 1 up through Malibu, big sur, maybe stay a night in the small motels along the river in big sur, continue to Monterey, carmel, Santa Cruz boardwalk is fun depending on your taste, up through half moon bay. this is best done over at least 2 days. I live in Monterey if you need more info let me know. whale watching is great right now here I've heard too, FYI. almost 8 years ago

Spend some time on the Coastal Highway. See Big Sur! Pfeiffer State Park has gorgeous redwoods and trails to hike. Eat at Nepenthe, gazing at the sea and mountains; make a reservation there if you can. FYI Hotels and motels around Monterey are ridiculously priced, so do some research before you go to save a pretty penny.
I agree with a previous poster, make time for Yosemite...come in thru the South entrance, drive thru the tunnel and prepare to turn left at the tunnel exit. Park and take in an incredible view of Yosemite. over 7 years agoAnswered by Debbie In VA viaAsk a Nomad iPad app

Is it possible to take the Pacific Coast Route though? I went back to LA from SF via it,so I am not sure if it works the other way round too.well if it does, take that route.it offers incredible view too. over 7 years ago
