We are touring the States for 8 weeks. LA to Boston and all points in between, Sept - Nov 2013. How best (and cheapest) way to do this. Should we hire a RV, hire a car and use motels or actually buy a car or RV and hope to sell it at the end in Boston. Has anyone faced this issue in the recent pasted.

Rv get horrible gas mileage. Plus you won't have a car to go exploring. . Renting car that is goof on gas would be way to go. Reserve America is great site to find and book camping spots that are reasonable. about 8 years ago

Sometimes you can pick up incredibly cheap deals on RV's if you look for 'Relocation Deals' - usually through the big car hire companies (i.e. http://www.apollorv.com/reloc.aspx ). They come and go though, so keep looking out for them. This might sort out some of the trip, then maybe change to a Hire Car/hostels for other parts. I've never driven an RV in the States, but have twice done so around New Zealand. Based on that experience, I wouldn't be too keen to take one into the big cities, but they're perfect for visiting National Parks and campgrounds. about 8 years ago

A great way to see the country that is not accessible by car is by train. It's cheap, you can sleep on it. You also get to see parts of the coast, mountains and through the Midwest. about 8 years ago

Small van/SUV or car with good mileage. car gives you a lot more freedom to park, check out smaller roads etc. to keep it cheaper than hotels every night, bring a tent and camp. Lots of great camping spots along the way. Travelers Auto Barn in Oz has a partnership with someone in the US. Contact their Sydney office to get more details as a convertible van that pops into a sleeper is the best of both. I've seen the model in San Diego, and they are nifty. http://www.travellers-autobarn.com.au/ about 8 years ago
