Driving route to the Pan American highway
We will be driving from Asheville NC through Mexico and would like to get over to the Pacific route. What is the best way to do this?

Hopefully some who's done the trip will help you with that, but I do know which roads are best avoided (according to the US State Dept anyway). Here's our report on their travel warning: http://journals.worldnomads.com/safetyhub/story/82854/Mexico/Mexico-Travel-Alert
And a little doozy I found today, 92% of domestic crimes go unreported: http://www.insightcrime.org/news-briefs/crimes-mexico-unreported-inegi

Doug, I have driven several routes in Mexico. The western route starting in Nogles is a good highway and the tolls used to be reasonable. I also drove the eastern route down to Veracruz and then over to Oaxaca, which is my favorite Mexican city. This route would also cut hours off your trip by not driving through Texas, NM and AZ. Again, ten years has passed but I would assume the roads have only gotten better. Good luck and happy travels. over 8 years ago
