A great place to check out is big basin national park. It's tucked away in the redwoods and offers prime hiking and mountain biking trails. However, if you are feeling more adventurous, camping on the beaches along hwy one is a great way to see the coast. Fires are allowed on most beaches, and you can get away with camping on the more remote ones north of Carmel and even Santa Cruz. about 8 years ago

Agree with Big Basin. Further north in Marin is Samuel p Taylor in the redwoods. Great for salmon spawning season in January ( I think they are still open then). I'm a big fan of Steep Ravine on the coast under Mt Tamalpais. Beautiful open views of the ocean. Skycamp in Pt Reyes national park is also fab for camping above the ocean. Great hiking in Pt Reyes too. It's a walk in site. Steep Ravine you must reserve as they give you the padlock number to drive your car down to the small parking area, then you have to walk or wheelbarrow you stuff to the site. Unless you book a cabin, which is right off the parking lot. about 8 years ago
