Hilo is lush and tropical, but rather rural. Kailua-Kona is located on the more touristy, drier side of the island. If you're looking for the picturesque Hawaii experience, Hilo. If you want more substantial amenities, go Kailua-Kona almost 6 years ago

Both sides have very interesting sites. In Hilo, be sure to go to the volcano. That area is so beautiful. The drive is long from Kona. I advise staying several days on both sides. It is the biggest island and there is so much to see. Dont miss any of it. We stayed 2 weeks last May and didnt get to see it all. almost 6 years ago

Visiting and living on the Big Island are very different things. The first thing to consider is your commute time to work. (Keep in mind gas is roughly $4.50 per gallon.) if you won't be working, then lifestyle -including weather- will be your next consideration. over 5 years ago
