Old Lyme CT was a lovely spot from what I recall on my stay there years ago. Providence RI is a compact city good for exploring on foot with an Italian neighborhood (i.e. restaurants), the RISD museum and Brown University to explore. Over on the Cape, I love Cotuit beaches and spts to kayak. I'm a big fan of Portsmouth NH, good area if you like biking. Maine, I've hiked and camped in Acadia NP and never ran out of outdoor activities to do there. Be sure to explore Portland, ME too, great restaurants with local artisan foods and produce/fish. almost 9 years ago

We did this two years ago. We flew into New York and drove to Maine to pick our daughter up from camp. Loved - in no particular order - Boston, Portsmouth, Mystic, Cape Cod (P'town is wild!). We planned to drive up the coast the whole way but ended up going inland for a bit when the forecast wasn't great and found some fantastic towns. I would recommend being flexible rather planning too much in advance almost 8 years ago
