Has anyone taken a stand by flight within the US? Is it terrible? How far in advance should I start researching about the fight?

This all depends on day of the week and time of day. Avoid Monday mornings, Thursday or Friday afternoons and evenings as these are the busiest times into ATL.

Delta will give you the most options to Atlanta. If you already have a ticket and want to fly standby at a different time on the same day, there's typically no fee if you try within 3 hours of your original flight. Otherwise you may encounter a fee or change in fare.

Check out www.delta.com for their flight schedules and any details on flying standby. Or call and ask 800-221-1212.

I would start researching about a week in advance. That would give you better accuracy of what the bookings look like. Friday evenings, Sunday's, and Monday mornings are terrible for standby. about 8 years ago
