    1) Get a good guidebook and decide what things you really want to do and see
    2) stay somewhere central. If it's your first visit to NYC midtown is great, make sure you're near a subway station - try www.hotelstanford.com
    3) book a couple of organised tours if you want to have someone show you the sights, the red site seeing busses are a great way to get a feeling for the layout of Manhattan
    4) buy a city pass - it includes entry to all the main attractions (MET, Museum of Natural History, Ferry to Liberty/Ellis Island, Empire State, Top of the Rock etc). You get a pretty decent discount and don't have to wait in line to buy tickets
    5) Don't buy entry to stuff from guys on the street - they're rip offs and will sell you stuff that you just don't need
    6) be prepared to walk - a lot
    7) if you want to climb up into the crown of the statue of liberty book really early. It sells out 4-6 monhts in advance
    8) eat a tonne of pizza coz it's awesome!
    9) go to a yankees game
    10) see a broadway show - go to TKTS in Times Square for some great deals almost 9 years ago

    Great answers Sarah!

My only addition is to spend your first day exploring. So grab some good walking shoes and off you go! almost 9 years ago

Check out Airbnb for renting an entire apartment/loft or private bedroom and live like a local. You can find decent places for way cheaper than hotels. And the reviews wont lie ;) Oh and be sure to see a show!!! over 8 years ago

Have a plan! There are so many fantastically unique things to do, see, & eat, but it's easy to become overwhelmed by the city if you aren't used to it. Check out yelp.com for restaurant ideas in particular, and look for spots that have top reviews. I use their app on my phone as I am wandering around, and typically find great new spots to experience. over 8 years ago

We took the NY pass which saved us a lot of money. Great deal for visiting the common touristic places (boat trip around manhattan, renting a bike in battery park, museums,... Liberty and Ellis Islands...). Just google "newyork pass". Cheers over 8 years ago
