I am flying Virgin Atlantic to Nairobi and have a layover in London from 10:30 am - 9:00 pm and would love to explore London for a bit. Would leaving the airport be possible? If so, is there anything I need to do before I leave (with luggage, passports, etc.)? Thanks!

I would imagine you are flying to Heathrow.

You can and should leave the airport if you have the chance - and the correct passport/visa. My advice would be to jump onto the tube and head up to central London. You could visit a museum, wander round the shops, or just walk a little in London looking at the sites.

The tube is easy; there is a train to Paddington; or you could do the bus but this would eat into your time. Taxis to central London are not cheap.

If you wanted to stay locally, you could always head to Hampton Court Palace, Richmond, Virginia Waters, Windsor etc.
