Just buy an amaysim micro sim from simcardguru.co.uk, you can order the sim with delivery to you in the UK (although it is shipped from Australia) so you have it before you leave home. If you buy two, you can use the other in your phone.

amaysim use the Optus network, which has good coverage and is much cheaper than getting an Optus, Telstra or Vodafone sim card for your iPad. I use this in my iPad and it works really well. over 8 years ago

You get what you pay for. If are going to be travelling around Australia, TELSTRA has the BEST coverage. I spent 18mths traveling around Aussie k it would bring a smile to my face when I heard people complaining about not having access. When I asked "what network are you on" I ALWAYS knew the answer would be anything BUT Telstra! It is a big land & there were only a very few remote areas we did not have coverage. over 8 years ago

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. When I looked at coverage in the middle I realised that Telstra is the best compromise to get good coverage. We found $30 per month more than we needed so have opted for $20 and it is working OK with some gaps. We are in Darwin at the moment and it will be interesting to see how it goes as we travel down to Alice and beyond. about 8 years ago
