I'm heading to London the first week of May. I would like to take at least one day and head out of the city. Any suggestions on the best day trips? I am torn between Stonehenge/Bath and Brighton, but am open to anything.

One day trip I really enjoyed was to Oxford with a trip out to Blenheim Palace. the Palace is really amazing, and the gardens would be beautiful in May. It is easily accessible by bus from Oxford. On the other hand, Bath is a wonderful day trip with lots to see and do. If you're really set on seeing Stonehenge, which I do think is worth it, I would suggest taking a train to Salisbury, see the cathedral, rent a car, and drive around to sites in the country. Avebury stone circle is less crowded than Stonehenge, and you are free to wander among the stones. Lacock is a really nice thatched roof village with an old abbey you can tour. Having a car is an added expense, but it really is the best way to enjoy the country... Choosing one itinerary to stick to is the hard part! over 8 years ago
