Depending on the ship it may be possible to ride as a passenger. Some ships have free berths for the owners, for example. But finding the right ship can be a real challenge. Try to find out which shipping companies have ships sailing your desired route and give them a call.

As for getting work to ride forget it. Unless you have your STCW95 and other necessary certifications, documented sea time, etc. you can't be hired. No exceptions, especially these days. And for the non-licensed deck jobs the competition is pretty tough.

Another option is to check out some of the crewing agencies and sites like vikingrecruitment.com for yachts looking for deckhands. Most require minimum certification, but you might get lucky.

Just be persistent and don't give up. It's a great way to travel and worth the hard work finding a berth. over 8 years ago

Just contact any of the major shipping lines offering the route between USA - UK nearly all f them have cabins available for private hire. Obviously you will appreciate these are working ships so it's quite the luxury of a cruise ship but still good fun. over 8 years ago
