I was thinking of renting a vehicle instead of travel by train or bus. Good or bad idea? Expensive?

Where will you be in England? The underground is better for getting around in London. over 6 years ago

We rented a car while in England and drove to Scotland, was scary at first being on the wrong side of the road, but we managed. Just think twice when you get under way, roundabouts were a little frightening also. I wouldn't recommend driving in London! Traffic is crazy! Also you'll need an international drivers license, which is easy to get. over 6 years ago

The tube is the best mode in London. Renting a car will be expensive and the running costs will be high as well. over 6 years ago

Car rentals - if done in advance - can be cost effective, especially if you are travelling with someone. The ease of having your own car to go longer journeys can outweight the cost element.

The bus and train network works well in some areas, and is awful in others. Multiple changes, trains running but no bus to meet the last train etc.

For big cities such as London, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc, then I would say dont have a car. You are much better off getting around using local transport or even walking. The prohibitive cost of parking and congestion charges for major cities plus the lack of parking would put me right off !!

So it depends on where you are going and what you want to see. If you are city-hopping, then you probably dont need a car. If you want to get out and about a bit more and see some of the countryside or plan on visiting a lot of places in a very short period of time, then hire a car. over 6 years ago

If you do, ask for automatic transmission. Adding shifting with wrong hand to the mix is one thing too many. over 6 years ago
