im currently applying for a uk work visa and my passport is at the agency. they say it usually takes up to 4 weeks - so i'm aiming to get it back by mid january. but ive booked a trip to go skiing in france at the end of january - and still need to apply to get a visa for that! its risky, because these embassys never give you a straight answer in when you can expect to have your documents back.
what should i do? its alot of money that will go down the drain if i dont have my french visa in time for my trip
is there an insurance company that will cover this? cancellation for any reason? or for failure to obtain a visa?

In general, like many other insurance companies, our policies do not cover you if you have to cancel your trip for just any reason or if you change your mind (including if you couldn't get your visa).
Generally, travel insurance policies will give you very defined reasons where you're covered for expenses if you have to cancel. It's likely only your pre-paid expenses are covered, not extra tickets if you have to quickly change your flights or buy new tickets for new travel dates. For example: for some of our policies, we only cover your pre-paid expenses if you have to cancel for medical reasons (eg. if you are medically unfit to travel at all or continue your trip.)
Other travel insurers may offer you the option to cancel for any reason - just make sure you check the terms and conditions really carefully aka read ALL of the fine print.

It depends how you bought your ticket. Sometimes the credit card companies and your regular insurance provider (i.e. auto, home, life insurance or employer union) offer safeguards. Call the company and airline before to assess where the gaps are before purchasing additional coverage. almost 8 years ago
