ok so it's not off the beaten path..at all.. but you will definitely have to go to taksim square.. there are a lot of clubs/bars and restaurants there and the music is really great. .also the blue mosque, hagia sofia, the topkapi palace, the grand bazaar and spice bazaar and try a turkish bath :-) ..there are a lot of tours in istanbul.. i'd recommend taking some brochures from the hotel and asking the people at the desk how to get to the places.. its a lot cheaper than doing a tour.
... in terms of being "off the beaten path" we found a lot of really great places though just by walking as far as possible and getting lost and going into random places. everybody in istanbul was really nice and helpful with getting us on the proper buses and trams back to our hotel. hope this helps a little :) over 11 years ago

Princes Islands are great, take a boat up the Bospherous to get a good view of all the palaces, and my favourite thing to do is go into the underground cisterns.

Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque really are worth a visit, as is the new modern local art place. over 11 years ago
