Heidi, it's relatively quiet at the moment.. but that's no indicator of future possibilities.
Remembering that the chances of being a victim of terrorism are extremely small (you're 4 times more likely to be hit by lightning!), you should be ok, but personally I'd stay away from obvious tourist draw cards like the Blue Mosque.
As for the airport, that attack occurred outside the secure area, so don't hang around in publicly accessible areas longer than necessary, get checked in and get through security. Or if picking up your bag, hang back from the crowd at the conveyor belt and wait till there's not such an obvious target grouping. But as I say, that's being ultra cautious!

Just came back from a trip to South-West Turkey via Istanbul (Sabiha Gocek Airport). Agree with Phil, be aware of your surroundings... I based my decisions reading about it on various travel forums and UK, US, and Australian travel advice. I noticed increased security at SG (to the usual) in the form of requesting you to pack outer wear (coats, jackets etc) in your luggage, or have it checked out by staff. I was photographing and questioned about it by a gendarme, although it was of a poster, and it was all ok. People are more alert naturally. almost 3 years ago
