Chora museum is a gem - off the beaten path but a treasure of old Byzantine frescos and mosaic. Visit the Hagia Sophia of course, blue mosque, sultanas met area and hippodrome, underground cistern - all in the same general area. Do a thorough tour of the topkapi palace just behind the Hagia Sophia. If you have time, see the archeology museum near topkapi. Definitely take a short cruise on the Bosporus, eat fish near the landing of spice market, spend time in the grand bazaar. If you have time, see the dolmabache museum slightly up town but accessible by metro. Be careful of ongoing protests in that area. almost 5 years ago
