We would like to stay in a smaller city or town but I would like to take some bellydance lessons while I am there. I know there are dancers in Istanbul but have been told it may be hard to find anyone elsewhere.
It is possible. Depends on what time of year you come, your own level of dance experience and where you want to stay. In Bodrum there is the Gokpinar Retreat Centre that does bellydance classes but I am unsure what level that is aimed at (e.g. beginners or advanced). In summer, dancers are contracted to perform nightly in tourist towns of Marmaris, Bodrum and Antalya. I have heard there are dancers in Goreme too all year round for the tourist shows. At this stage of the year though, it is difficult to know who will be available and where. The best thing to do is to google "bellydance show" and the town you want to stay, then get in contacted with that venue to arrange a class - but do ask who the teacher will be and do research the teacher they have dance experience, speak english (if thats important to you) and to make sure they present belly dance professionally.
If you are an experienced dancer then do check out Rakkas Istanbul (http://www.rakkasistanbul.com) - to be held April/May and Tarazade (tarazade.com) to be held September. Top International dancers are coming to Istanbul this year - a good time to come to Istanbul as a bellydancer!
